Façade

Cleaning

Not only can dirt, grime or paint prove unsightly, over time it can also cause significant damage to the stone and brickwork of your historic structure.

Facade Cleaning

Restoring the natural beauty of your building

Thankfully, there are many ways of cleaning stone and brickwork, not only to improve the appearance of a structure, but also to maintain the integrity of its façade, avoiding further damage in the future.

We have an experienced cleaning team, trained in a range of techniques to guarantee the most appropriate and cost-effective service. We use both wet and dry abrasive and non-abrasive systems as well as a range of sympathetic chemical processes in order to achieve the desired result. Benefitting from the latest specialist equipment, we’re also able to clean historic steelwork and timber using the controlled pressure abrasive method.

Before our craftsmen set foot on site, each and every structure is thoroughly assessed by one of our directors; a time-served professional who’ll provide you with a competitive, no-obligation quote. Should you decide to instruct these works, we’ll work hand in hand both with both you and your stakeholders, adjusting our working hours and practices to suit the unique requirements of your project.

Using the wrong techniques when cleaning a building can lead to even greater damage. It's essential, therefore, that you select a contractor who'll take a safe, sympathetic and environmentally-friendly approach to façade cleaning.

Cleaning methods include

  • JOS / Torc System – Burleigh Stone are an approved contractor for this specialist, low pressure rotational vortex cleaning system. Our operatives have received the specialist training insisted upon by the system supplier to ensure that all equipment is used correctly with works being carried out in accordance with set guidelines
  • DOFF System – DOFF cleans stonework and masonry using high-temperature steam. Whilst the temperature in the system is high, the pressure on the surface being cleaned is very gentle and the volume of water is low. The surface is therefore not saturated and will be dry within minutes. The superheated water vapor will remove paint, moss, algae, fungi and other biological matter and will also kill off spores. This means there’s then no need to use a chemical biocide during the removal process or as a protection against further biological activity.
  • Poultice Cleaning – In certain circumstances (particularly with internal works), our poultice cleaning method can sometimes be the only appropriate method available without damaging the fabric of your structure. Ideal for cleaning badly-stained marble and granite., this process uses a variety of materials depending upon the surfaces to be cleaned and the extent of the staining.
  • Controlled Pressure Abrasive – Both dry and wet abrasive techniques are offered, our craftsmen using specialist equipment to carefully control the amount of abrasive and pressure required in order to avoid damage to the underlying surface.
  • Specialist Chemical – Our team use both hot and cold water systems, only using materials from the industry’s leading manufacturers.
  • Nebulous Water Spray – A gentle approach, ideal for more delicate surfaces such as limestone and some sandstones, nebulous water spray cleaning involves applying a fine mist water spray under regulated pressure to the masonry surface.

Paint and graffiti removal

Paint, specialist coatings and unsightly graffiti can be removed from most surfaces, our skilled operatives using a variety of approaches to restore your structures to their original condition. Once cleaned, we’re also able to apply anti-graffiti coatings to aid future removal in areas of recurring vandalism.

Be it stone, brick, terracotta, granite or marble, we offer a range of restorative techniques depending upon the type of paint and the surface to which it has been applied.

Where appropriate, all works can be carried out in accordance with guidelines set down by English Heritage, CADW and Local Authority Conservation Departments.
